Born in Sofia in 1951, Bulgarian filmmaker Georgi Balabanov graduated from The National Theatre Academy of Sofia and worked as a director at the Theatre of Pazardzhik in the 1970s. In 1981 he directed his first short film, Commemoration, a prizewinner at primer in several European festivals. After a series of films on Bulgarian painters and a stint at the Théâtre du Soleil, he settled in Paris and pursued a career as an independent filmmaker.
