Domingo

Family gatherings, politics and life itself can be chaotic, which is probably why directing duo Linhart and Barbosa have given Domingo such a consciously messy form. But all the threads, characters and plots in this story are nevertheless held together by the fact that everything takes place on the same day, at the faded countryside estate of a family of landowners. Here, a champagne luncheon is planned as Lula da Silva is sworn in as Brazil’s first socialist president on the TV in the background. A rich gallery of characters, pithy dialogue and lots of arguments, sex and tennis lessons make this a wonderful portrait of a family that has seen better days. (Göteborg Film Festival)
