Long Shot (2019)

English For the first time in a while, a great romantic comedy, dominated by the charismatic Charlize Theron and the typically right-headed Seth Rogen. The film benefits most from the idea and the sheer chemistry between the two lead characters. Theron is running for president and Rogen has no job, style or manners. The biggest highlights are a high Charlize Theron negotiating with terrorists and Seth's drug paraphernalia during a security search. Very good, fresh and sweet. 80%.

Game of Thrones - Season 8 (2019) (season)

English Season 8 may have been one of the weaker, but it definitely doesn't deserve 65%. Technically, it remains the best television show ever and episode 3 along with the battle in episode 5 were among the best ever shown on TV. The last episode was a bit too tedious for my taste, but all in all I'm happy with how it turned out. 80%.

Pokémon: Detective Pikachu (2019)

English I grew up with Pokemon and was curious about this film, but in the end I'm disappointed by the overly infantile nature of it. Ryan Reynolds is great as the voice Pikachu, but the humor is not as effective as it should have been and I'm a bit disappointed with the storyline, as the film took a route ore typical for a sequel. I definitely would have liked to see more Pokemon hunting in the wild and duels in arenas, which would have been both more fun and more true to what I know from my childhood. It’s not bad, but the potential was higher. 60%.

John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum (2019)

English I was going to write “epic conclusion to the action trilogy”, but they’ve announced a 4th installment yesterday, so this is just a solid sequel that action-wise represents the best the US has offered in the last few years. A big improvement is that the new Wick has picked up some great reinforcements from Asia (Cecep and Ruhian from The Raid) delight also the hilarious Mark Dacascos and the perfectly trained Halle Berry. Visually, John Wick 3 is brilliant. The graceful styling and luxury comes through in every frame, and since I care enough about the aesthetic, I enjoyed the pleasantly fancy sets. The action is of course perfect in the context of an American production (clear cinematography, minimal editing, lots of creative ideas and decent choreography), at times you could feel that Keanu Reeves wasn't keeping up, especially against Cecep and Ruhian you could see that it was a bit too rehearsed (Jason Statham would probably have fought better here), but there are other interesting elements: the library, the sharp dogs in Istanbul, the uncompromising scene in the stable with the horse, the motorbikes and katanas, where they took inspiration from South Korea's The Villainess. Outside of the action, the pace is slower, but it doesn't significantly matter. A decent ride and without a doubt a clear cinematic must-see. 85%.

Hit-and-Run Squad (2019)

English Han Jun-hee made his debut with the great thriller Coin Locker Girl and now he has fallen into B-movie waters with a not-so-interesting theme about cars, racing and traffic. Considering the film is over two hours long and the action is kept to a minimum, it drags quite a bit, the stuttering villain is more annoying than interesting and none of the main characters are very engaging either. It is shot competently and there are two decent fights, but I didn't enjoy it. 40%

Pitbull: Ostatni pies (2018)

English Patryk Vega has been replaced by Wladyslaw Pasikowski and fortunately both are among the best Poland has to offer. The brutality and action may have diminished, but this is still a solid infiltration crime drama with the beautiful Dorota Rabczewska, a decent pace and an entertaining story. The Poles are good at these mafia thrillers. 80%.

Andhadhun (2018)

English India serves up a cracking and intelligent thriller like that is very close to European stuff. The film has a very original story about a pianist who pretends to be blind to make more money, but everything goes wrong when he witnesses a murder, even though everyone things he didn't actually see anything, and so a plethora of uncomfortable situations arise where the main character's neck is on the line several times. Very suspenseful, entertaining, well acted and with a decent dose of morbid and shocking twists (the creativity of the filmmakers is excellent), and there is a bit of violence. A solid affair by Indian standards, which does without the dancing. 80%.

Bad Seeds (2018)

English An enjoyable French comedy that will amuse, move and surprise. The main character is in charge of a group of incorrigible pupils and will spend his days with them in a rather funny way. There will be no big laughs, but the film will put a smile on your face without any problems. Kheiron as director and lead actor decent. 75%.

Coyote (2017)

English Hungarian European western, fight for land, gangsters! The film has unexpectedly decent and sharp fights, a good villain and a not very likeable main character. An interesting film that doesn't grab you, but has some decent moments. 65%.

The Command (2018)

English I'm not a big fan of submarines and the Navy, so I went into this film more out of curiosity and it wasn't bad. The explosion in Kursk is filmed decently and the following submarine survival drama is filmed entertainingly though it definitely could have been grittier as well as more gripping. I wasn't bored but I'm not the target audience. However, for fans of submarines and movies based on true events, I recommend it. 60%.
