Steel is a powerful material. Without steel, neither knives, forks, pans and many tools would exist, nor would cars, bridges or electricity. Steel is a symbol of technological progress.
Although today's technical standard is very high, the casting of steel remains a challenge of its own. Looking back to the middle of the 19th century, it was two Germans who identified the potential of this cutting-edge technology. They recognized that the casting of steel would be an important achievement for the heavy industry. However, this knowledge led to a bitter "turf war" in the Ruhr Valley between Alfred Krupp and Jakob Mayer.
