Plots(1)

Mr Ducháček runs the law firm JUDr. Faukner in an eccentric, but thoroughly committed way. The firm is administering financial matters for the Rispaldic family. The members of this aristocratic family are all condescending towards their lawyer Faukner except for the daughter Julie, who is secretly in love with him. Nobody but Ducháček knows that the profligate family has no money left and that JUDr. Faukner is privately subsidising them because he loves Julie. Ducháček does not hesitate to work through the night to enumerate to his boss all the debts the family Rispaldic has. Under pressure from her mother Julie turns down the lawyer's marriage proposal, although she does admit she loves him. Faukner who is now out of money himself makes Ducháček to come up with 25,000 crowns himself to pay off a bill of exchange that Julie's brother fraudulently signed. Ducháček prepares an auction at the Rispaldics' manor house to raise the funds the family needs to pay off its debts. The banker Zamoski arrives, one of the Rispaldics' biggest creditors. The wily Ducháček makes Zamoski concede that a bill of exchange that the late admiral Rispaldic had allegedly signed years earlier is in fact a fake. The family thereby gets out of financial straits. English Burian is God and Ducháček is his great acting recital. All the dialogues are tailor-made and he delivers them with such gusto that even after the tenth screening it never loses his charm. ()

English Better Call Saul - pre-War edition. Madhouse with four locations and statically standing actors who lack proper charisma. In the twisted Burian-esque performance, there is something unnatural and unpleasant for me. I regret that the potential of his disturbed negative character was only exploited by the communists in The Chicken and the Sexton. ()

English I like how Vlasta Burian is actually a supporting character, but due to his nature, he perfectly comes to the forefront, overshadowing all the others. But that doesn't matter at all because he simply carries the film, and some of his lines are just unbelievable. He simply had God-given talent, so he was able to turn this plot into a great comedy, even though with another actor it might have been downright silly at times. ()

English I do not understand the high rating of this Burian's comedy. I consider it average, even slightly below average. Burian, Marvan, and Šlégl knew how to knock it out of the park much better. ()

English When Karel Lamač returned to the Czech film industry after his forced departure from the Reich, he went for what was tried-and-true - Burian films and his own remakes. In spite of fate, his last works with Vlasta are particularly appreciated, perhaps also because the two were fully aware of the advantages of collaborating on the same artistic level. Lamač never forced Burian into anything, and the overall relaxed and pleasant mood is still evident in these films even after more than 70 years. The only one who apparently didn't get enough credit was Adina Mandlová, who referred to all films in which she didn't play the lead role as salads. That was rather short-sighted of her, wasn't it?
