A key name in the renovation of the Andalusian film scene at the turn of the century, essentially through the success of the Cinexín project (two collections of short films in which artists performed various roles). Working with one of his generation mates, Alberto Rodríguez, he made the short Bancos (2000) and the feature film El factor Pilgrim (2000), winning the New Directors Award at the San Sebastian Festival. As a solo director, he directed major films such as Astronautas (2003), for which he was nominated for a Goya and earned awards in Valladolid as well as Nantes, and Cabeza de perro (2006), before moving away from independent cinema with the commercial comedy ¿Quién mató a Bambi? (2013). In 2019 he made Yo, mi mujer y mi mujer muerta (2019). Las Gentiles is a comeback to his origins.
