Biography

Began his career in the early 60’s, and alter founding his own production company, El Imán (1967), directed films such as Furtivos, Río abajo, Sabina y Tata mía. He was President of the Academia de Artes y Ciencias Cinematográficas de España from 1994 to 1998 and President of the SGAE from 2007 to 2011. He won the Goya Award for Best Director in 2001 for his film Leo. For the same film he also won the Jury’s Special prize at the Málaga Film Festival and the Silver Fotogramas Award ex aequo with Alex de la Iglesia’s La Comunidad. In 2002, he received the National Cinemtography Award, and in 2003, he won the Tigre Juan Award for his narrative film Camisa de once varas. In 2007, the Chunta Aragonesista conceded him the 3rd Aragonese Award in Madrid. In February 2008, he was elected as an academic for the Real Academia Española.
