Biography

A driving force in the Ibero-American cinema. She started her career as a documentary director, and shortly she chose to follow a path as producer. In 1973 she produced Reed, México Insurgente, one of the first independent films in Mexico, winner of the Georges Sadoul award in Cannes. Since then, she has produced important films for the Ibero-American cinema, including El Laberinto del Fauno. She is the founder of two companies: Salamandra Producciones, (previously known as Iguana Films) a joint venture with Alejandro Springall; and Tequila Gang, alongside Guillermo del Toro. Since 1993, she coordinates the Script Lab, supported by the Sundance Institute, with the goal of improving the quality of scripts written in Spanish. Since 2009 she coordinates the Music for Cinema Lab, also supported by the Sundance Institute; and the Actor-Director Lab, supported by the Instituto Mexicano de Cinematografía, Secretaría de Cultura, Cátedra Bergman, among others. In 2008, Bertha Navarro received the Mayahuel de Plata award, honoring her long and successful career; and in the same year, her biography was published in a book called Bertha Navarro: Cineasta sin fronteras. In 2015 she received the Ariel de Oro award for her successful career in Mexican cinema. Within her great volume of work, it is worth noting the following films: Cronos (Guillermo del Toro, 1993), winner of 21 awards in Mexico and abroad; Un embrujo (Carlos Carrera, 1998), winner of 11 awards; El espinazo del diablo (Guillermo del Toro, 2001), 6 awards and 7 nominations; El laberinto del fauno (Guillermo del Toro, 2006), winner of 3 Oscar in different categories, 6 BAFTA awards, 6 Goya and 9 Ariel awards; Ayotzinapa, el paso de la tortuga (Enrique García Meza, 2018) and Sonora (Alejandro Springall, 2018).
