Jon Plowman

Jon Plowman

Biography

Jon Plowman has been associated with "Absolutely Fabulous" since its TV pilot in 1991. He was Producer or Executive Producer of every show since then through 40 or so TV episodes. Before that he worked with Jennifer Saunders on French and Saunders and with her comedy partner Dawn French on "Murder Most Horrid", "Roger and Val have Just Got In" and The Vicar of Dibley. He was Head of Comedy Entertainment then Head of Comedy at the BBC from the mid 1990s to 2007.

He was the guy who said "yes" to Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant making 'The Office', to Matt Lucas and David Walliams making 'Little Britain', and was the Executive Producer of 'Shooting Stars', 'Goodness Gracious Me', 'The League of Gentlemen', 'Gimme, Gimme, Gimme', and 'The Thick Of It' amongst others. He had an earlier period when he seemed only to make shows that had "and" in the title, hence 'Smith and Jones', 'French and Saunders' , 'Fry and Laurie', and 'Bottom' - except that that didn't have an "and", all of which he produced.

In addition he was responsible for 'The Office' 2003 Christmas special which won at the RTS and BAFTA, plus the BBC's first awards at the Golden Globes in 2004 .

Plowman has enjoyed a long and successful relationship with the writers and performers of 'The League of Gentleman', following up that show with 'Psychoville' and 3 series of 'Inside Number 9'. He has an equally successful run of shows with John Morton from 'People Like Us' through '2012' to the more recent 'W1A' which will return to BBC screens later in 2015, assuming the BBC still has screens by then.

He began his career in Broadcasting at Granada TV following a period working in the Theatre, notably as assistant to Lindsay Anderson at the Royal Court.

He has won the RTS Judges Award for Outstanding Achievement in Broadcasting which he was presented to him in 2006, a lifetime achievement and an OBE for services to British Comedy which he was awarded in 2013. He is a Fellow of the RTS and a Fellow of the RSA.
