Juan Zavala has an extensive background as a film journalist on radio and television. In 2019 he directed the mid-length África en Cinecicleta (2019). He was a presenter of the Zinemaldia Get-togethers between 2007 and 2019. He has been executive producer and co-screenwriter of the documentaries by Pedro González Bermúdez, such as Regreso a Viridiana (Goya for Best Documentary Short Film, 2014), El último adiós de Bette Davies (2014), nominated for the Best Documentary Goya, and Nostromo: El sueño imposible de David Lean (2017). El crítico is his first feature film as a director.
