In a case of murder, Albanian tradition obliged the victim’s family to either publicly forgive the perpetrator or take their revenge. Needless to say, such a choice has a massive impact on the whole society. The Kanun is a set of Albanian traditional, secular laws that had been followed by local Christians and Muslims for centuries, and revived in some parts after the fall of communism. It contains an idea of justice based on the principle of “an eye for an eye”, which includes revenge – but also allows for forgiveness and reconciliation. It can affect entire families for generations. Documentarist Marija Zidar follows a family facing such a decision. While the local bishop tries to persuade the patriarch to take the path of mercy, in the tavern, modern-day mediators shout that the Kanun is part of a proud Albanian heritage. Will the dead girl’s father find the strength to forgive? And what of her mother who watches it all from afar – will she accept her husband’s decision? This powerful observational drama from the remote Albanian highlands reminds us that forgiveness is one of the most difficult human acts. (One World)
