At the beginning of the 50s, Gencsi Jani, the young pitman, goes to work to a new mine. To his disappointment, he is only employed as a trammer. After lengthy disputes he manages to get to the post he desires. As a pitman, he achieves outstanding results with his enthusiastic team. He falls in love with Krizs Ica, also working at the mine. A working competition is launched, following Jani's method. Meanwhile Jani is accused with fraud. He manages to clean himself, but a new disappointment awaits him: someone else is appointed as the miners' delegate to the miners' congress. His love, Ica, seems to be more inclined towards Urján Feri, the secretary of the Communist Youth Organisation and fails to support Jani at a meeting. Jani's friend, the orphan Tibsi, dies in an accident and Jani feels responsible for his death. As a result of his disappointments and bad conscience he leaves town. Ica realises too late that she is in love with him. (official distributor synopsis)
