The film is a ballad about the dwellers of a block-of-flats in Angyalföld. The Mitrovácz family makes ends meet of the salary of the father, a locomotive driver. Miklós, in spite of his mother's scornfulness, makes friends with their Communist neighbour's son . Mitrovácz goes to work drunk, causes an accident and dies. A stowaway blackmails his wife. A few family cannot pay their rent, but the others accept them and they all declare a strike by refusing to pay their rents. Gendarmes dislodge the whole house except for the Mitrovácz family and a bachelor accountant who kept out of the strike. A blackmailer seduces Aranka, Miklós's sweetheart and makes her perform in a circus show. The young man wins the girl back. Imruska falls seriously ill. Miklós convinces the Association to help them move back the dislodged people. Imruska dies the same night. He is mourned by the song of the old hurdy-gurdy man. (official distributor synopsis)
