Marcel Camus’ Black Orpheus (Orfeu negro) brings the ancient Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice to the twentieth-century madness of Carnival in Rio de Janeiro. With its eye-popping photography and ravishing, epochal soundtrack, Black Orpheus was an international cultural event, and it kicked off the bossa nova craze that set hi-fis across America spinning. This film definitely has something going for it. Marcel Camus took a classic story and transported it into a peculiar, exotic setting, where it might seem like it wouldn't work, but thanks to the non-actors and interesting music, it works well. Still, something fundamental didn't resonate with me, and I didn't feel like I was watching a pivotal cinematic work. ()
