Although Czímer András has been living away from his village for over twenty years, he is still appointed as the new chairman of the local agricultural co-op. Long ago, he left the village as a result of his not returned love for the wealthy peasant daughter, Margit. Today, Margit is the wife of Gyepes Sándor. Czímer starts working enthusiastically but brutally, soon turning the villagers against himself. He also interferes with the life of the daughter of the Gyepes family. The father refuses to let her daughter Rozi marry the Gypsy boy, Bálint, although the two are in love. In a way, Czímer orders them to get married. By this deed he provokes everybody's, even Bálint's, anger. The time of frost is about to set in. Czímer orders the men to work in the night, but his orders are boycotted. Gyepes is the first to conquer his negative emotions and start working for the common goal. Slowly he is followed by the others, and, working together, they fight off the common danger.
