Summer of 1956. In the small town in the Hungarian country-side, during the time the chief of police spends in a course in Budapest, Rigó Dezső is the boss with full powers. He is fighting tooth and nail to help the local football-team stay in the second national selection. During one of the matches, he beats the referee to death. Balla, the journalist who has been imprisoned for his political views discloses the truth, and although the article is never published, Rigó has him carried off. Rigó would like to make Dongó, a witness to the murder, silent, too. Eventually, two people die. Balla is declared insane and his wife and son are removed from their home. The returning chief of police sets everything right, but then Balla's teen-age son accidentally kills an innocent man. (official distributor synopsis)
