Larsen, a cocksure young author with a great zest for life, joins a fur-trapping expedition. Armed with self-confidence and a love letter from his girlfriend, he arrives in East Greenland late in the summer of 1928. Together with him on the boat is Holm, an experienced hunter. Before the ship continues its journey they are met by Randbæk who has wintered there and is to lead the expedition. The three are going to spend the winter together. Randbæk realises that Larsen is the greenhorn of the party, and only Holms intervention prevents his being relegated to the role of housekeeper. Randbæk never gives Larsen a minute of peace. The continual violent conflicts between Randbæk and Larsen eventually become too much for Holm. After one particularly hard fight, on Christmas Eve, Larsen and Randbæk wake up to discover that Holm has disappeared. Winter has scarcely begun, and with Holms flight from the two increasingly aggressive hunters, the chances of survival in the icy wastes get slimmer and slimmer. (Ostrava Kamera Oko)

A film based on three characters who could easily be caricatures anywhere else, but thanks to their actors, they are simply great individuals. The story is actually just about surviving in society with other people, but the film is immensely strong and chilling, not because of the weather, but precisely because of the people.
