Decsi Sándor, assistant horse-herd has completed his military service. He learns that his sweetheart, Klári cheated on him with Lacza Ferkó, the cattle-herd. It is Klári's famous yellow roses that Lacza wears by his hat that tell him: Klári has become his lover. She herself is called "The Yellow Rose". Klári denies the charge, but the two men continue to compete. She would like to get Sándor's love back, so she gives him the magic potion prepared by Cipra, the Gypsy girl, who loves Ferkó.
