In the sixties, the people of Mali awoke each morning to the sound of his melancholy voice on the radio which sang of independence. KarKar, he was called, black jacket, and every person in Mali of his generation remembers having danced to his hits Mali Twist and Kayes-Ba in which he encouraged his compatriots to return and build the country. He was the Elvis Presley of Mali. In 1989 he is dealt a blow: Pierette, his beloved wife, dies. After a twenty-year absence from the stage his career takes on a new life when people from the label Stern’s Music in London listen an old record from KarKar made in the Mali radio in the sixties and convince him to retake his guitar.
