András is fed up with the life-style and the lies of his father, who was converted from a factory-worker into a party-functionary, and his father's newly wed young wife. He joins a paper mill as an unskilled worker. He lives in the summer-kitchen attached to his god-father's house in the outskirts and has an affair with the daughter of uncle Feri, neglecting therefore his lover, Kata, who is a university student. One day Anna lets him know that she intends to marry Zotyó, as she cannot consider András seriously as an eligible husband. On the day of the wedding, after 40 years of having worked devotedly as a works manager of the paper mill, Uncle Feri is found guilty of a fatal accident at the mill. He drowns his sorrow into drinking, which causes a scandal. For the first time in his life, András attempts to be of help. He hides the old man in Kati's hut to give him time to think things over.
