Pretending to be insane, Kornél has himself discharged from the army and goes back home. He was a prop man in the theatre of a town in the Vajdaság, and his friend and rival Tibi, as well as his ex-love Zsuzsa are working here. Kornél's father is the manager of a big company, a progressed diabetic, devouring sweets though. His grandmother was a star actress once, indulging in obsessional ideas. Aunt Etelka is the only one who Kornél feels attached to. Nightly Etelka distributes leaflets against the war, falls when trying to run away, and after being taken to hospital she dies in silence. Kornél feels desperately lost. With the theatre troupe travelling about, a fierce fight is leashed off in the train coach due to some slight misunderstanding. (Kép - Árnyék)
