Baracs Pista, engineer at the construction site of a railway line near the Korláthy estate, falls in love with Rolla, a countess disguised as a peasant girl. The count is giving a party as he wants the railway line to go across his lands. During the party, Baracs recognises Rolla, and, to add to the fun, introduces his own valet, Miska as count Eleméry. Rolla, in return, has Marcsa, her servant, dressed up as countess Eleméry. Both the outfit and the behaviour of Miska and Marcsa soon turns into the caricature of high society manners. Enter Eleméry, the real thing, who is an enlightened, modern man, and stands by the engineer in the Baracs versus Korláthy dispute. Baracs and Rolla eventually find their happiness.
