Doctor Kovács, son of a peasant family man from Northern Hungary, becomes an honourable professor of history at the university. He would marry Tatár Ada, daughter of the parvenu lawyer, whose family is ashamed of his. So Kovács decides for his old sweetheart, Balog Ágnes.
