The story of this symbolic film takes place towards the end of World War II. The widow of the professor has lost all the three of her sons. Yet she unflinchingly believes that they will once return. When the front reaches where she lives, she finds herself left alone in an evacuated city with her memories and the one-time nurse of her sons. Although Dada (Nurse) knows the truth, she cannot but make believe, along with the mother's self-deception, that the sons will return. From among the turmoil of horses frightened of air-raids, cart-caravans, staggering, wounded refugees, two young strangers come up to the villa. The two women receive them as their own children, nurse them and caress them. After their departure they continue to help other wounded soldiers, until Dada is hit by a bullet.
