Plots(1)
Notorious pirate March refuses to attack and rob American ships in honor of his adopted homes regard for freedom. Hiding out in the Louisiana swamp country, March pines for New Orleans and the wealthy Grahame, whom he loves. After rescuing the pretty Gaal from a German ship that he has pillaged, March learns that the British are about to attack his beloved New Orleans. Coming to the aid of Sothern and his American forces in what would be called the War of 1812, March helps defeat the attackers and is hailed as a hero. As March is about to be decorated and accepted into the US, the ceremony is interrupted by Grahame who announces that Marchs pirate pals have sacked and burned another ship, killing her sister, who happened to be on board. With his past honor now destroyed, March returns to bayou country and the life of an adventuring rogue, with the adoring Gaal at his side. Fun, exciting typical DeMille film with plenty of over-played yet entertaining action. March puts some spirit into the role of the wild-living pirate with a passion for women and America. The film earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Cinematography. (official distributor synopsis)
