1945, a railway station in Budapest, starving soldiers returning home, a whirling crowd. This is where Kovács István Jr. and Szandál Juli meet for the first time. They fall in love and move in together to a hut belonging to the storehouses on the éjpest Danube embankment. Juli is frightened by the child-like purity and honest happiness of the large man. She scolds him for being generous, for undertaking every difficult tasks free of charge. Juli cannot starve, and one morning she leaves with Feri, a man living of doubtful business ventures. The Giant, who is sick of her absence, learns that the two were shoved off from the top of a train carriage and died. Once again the Giant owns nothing, and he starts out to meet the wide world.
