The film begins when the singer comes out of retirement and heads back to Broadway, only to find that styles have changed and he no longer pulls top-billing. His manager (William Demarest) convinces him to entertain troops during the war, where he meets and falls in love with an army nurse (Barbara Hale), who encourages Al to get back in the entertainment game.
