Fifty years after the formation of the People’s Republic of China and the island republic of Taiwan, former Nationalist soldier Lui Yangsheng (Feng Ling) returns to Shanghai to visit his one true love Qiao Yu'e (Lisa Lu). Lui Yangsheng fled mainland China on February 10, 1949, without saying goodbye to Qiao Yu'e, who was pregnant at the time with their baby.
