85% of Greenland, the world’s largest island, is covered by ice layers hundreds of years old. Serge Aviotte, a speleologist, sets off with his team to this land in the Arctic Ocean. It is his 14th expedition. Besides carrying out research, he is also trying to break his own world record for the depth of descent into an ice cave. It currently stands at173 m. From the start the group of scientists must deal with the adverse weather conditions which make the sport and research part of the journey more difficult. They collect samples of mysterious animal species from the as yet unexplored depths of the ice halls. These species have managed to adapt to life in the extremely adverse conditions of the polar world. Some of the microorganisms discovered may survive for centuries and almost avoid their own death thanks to their ability to hibernate for many years. Death is often caused by absolute body dehydration in extremely low temperatures. All the facts examined by Serga Aviotta’s team lead to hope for the future. Similar physiological processes to those of the arctic microorganisms could be applied to people. Mankind is crossing the border, beyond which utopian dreams of eternal life will come true.
