June 1940. On the beaches of Dunkerque which have been mercilessly shelled by German bombardments, thousands of French and English soldiers are waiting to depart for England. Julien abandons his three friends to attempt to embark at Bray-Dunes with the English aboard a freighter. He manages by the skin of his teeth to escape from the ship as it bursts into flames and has to swim to the shore. He finds Jeanne, and kills two soldiers who were trying to rape her. Later, when they decide to flee together, Julien is killed in a bomb attack. (Cannes Film Festival)
