Tom at the Farm

Xavier Dolan impressively captures the psychology and sparks between the characters, through which he heals his own demons. But that doesn’t make for a completely satisfying film experience. Tom at the Farm is a solidly developed relationship drama in which the dark secrets and truths of the past are revealed with escalating tension, but in the end it comes across as empty and turns out to be just an engaging but forgettable snapshot. I was quite excited to see Xavier Dolan's new film, but I wasn't completely satisfied with the product. The visuals are very nice, the atmosphere is quite agonizing and bleak, but somehow the story didn't grab me. Or rather, the story as a whole, because I somehow didn't get into the plot and moreover I didn't understand the very irrational behaviour of the characters. Quite possibly this was the director's intention, but it bothered me. In short, a film that is well made, no question about it, but I just couldn't get into the world I was presented with – unfortunately. (08/26/2014)

This is the third film with Xavier Dolan’s name signed under it and I almost didn’t finish watching it to the end. I have a feeling that his stories might not be up my alley. (11/21/2014)
