Set in the mecca of the rich and famous, Ray Donovan does the dirty work for L.A.'s top power players. The series stars Liev Schreiber as the go-to guy who makes the problems of the city's celebrities, superstar athletes, and business moguls disappear. This powerful drama unfolds when his father, Mickey Donovan, is unexpectedly released from prison, setting off a chain of events that shakes the Donovan family to its core. Ray works with two associates – his #1, Avi, an imposing Israeli, and Lena, a laconic, hardboiled lesbian who serves as his #2. Most of Ray's work is for the most powerful law firm in town led by his confidante and mentor Ezra Goodman, and his partner, Lee Drexler. The only problems he can't fix are those involving his own family. Ray's brother Bunchy was abused by a priest and now can't stay sober; his brother Terry was left in the boxing ring too long and developed Parkinson's; and the ghost of their little sister -- who committed suicide when she was a teenager -- haunts them all. Additionally, his wife Abby is still adjusting to their suburban life while raising their two children, Bridget and Conor. To Ray, all of their problems can be traced back to one person: their father Mickey, a gangster with the Irish mob who never protected his family. But everything is turned upside down when Mickey, after twenty years in a cage, makes his way to Los Angeles and is hungry for revenge. He wants money, a new life, and his place at the head of his family. (official distributor synopsis)

Reviews of this series by the user Necrotongue (78)

Walk This Way (2014) (S02E07)

English Even though the plot of the seventh episode revolved mainly around the Donovan family's relationships, I really enjoyed it this time. The surprise for Conor's birthday was good in itself, but the subsequent birthday celebration was absolutely perfect. Mickey really nailed it this time. :-) ()

Sunny (2014) (S02E08)

English "I have to admit that if it weren't for the great ending, I would only give this episode four stars, because the shared scenes of Bridget and Marvin really annoy me and the recording studio takes the cake. Avi's effort to avoid the unpleasant task and Mickey's conversation with the curator entertained me. 'Black ass?' 'Someone from the family?'" ()

Snowflake (2014) (S02E09)

English I couldn't rate the ninth episode any better, Abby's screaming got on my nerves too much this time and Bunchy's problems bored me too much. The development of the situation at least gave me hope that the next episode could be considerably more interesting, so I quietly hope. ()

Volcheck (2014) (S02E10)

English This was a typical episode of this series, very decent script, quality acting performances, several well-developed storylines, but something was just missing. To earn a fifth star, I would need an exciting pace or quality action, the Volcheckova scene at the very end was not enough. ()

Rodef (2014) (S02E11)

English What I was missing in the previous episode, I found in the eleventh episode. Ray's balance nicely contrasted with the action of Mickey's team, and both storylines came together beautifully in a great finale. The found video also set up a thrilling conclusion, so all that's left is to hope that the writers won't disappoint. ()

The Captain (2014) (S02E12)

English So here I had no reason to hesitate, clear full fire. I would say that the final episode of the second season was so far the best of the whole series. I had a great time the whole time, the creators did their best, the finale excellently escalated and got me tuned in for the third season. ()

Season 3 (2015) (S03)

English I definitely enjoyed Season 3 more than the previous season. Well, except the fourth episode which was a huge disappointment for me. Luckily, it turned out to be an isolated incident and my overall impression of the season was excellent. Eddie Marsan's acting performance keeps getting better and better. His Terry Donovan is increasingly entertaining. Even the character of Bunchy no longer got on my nerves, and often amused me. I was glad that the writers brought back ex-agent Cochran and the whole Finney family. These characters give the series a new edge. ()

The Kalamazoo (2015) (S03E01)

English The first episode of the third season didn't impress me at all, it was a typical episode of the series and under normal circumstances, I would rate it with four stars, but the creators pleased me with the casting of Ian McShane, so I'm giving them a bonus star. ()

Ding (2015) (S03E02)

English I was very satisfied with the second episode. The creators managed to achieve a mix of rather funny scenes with Mickey's new business and Bunchy's new love interest, as well as some proper action provided by Ray and Terry. I still don't know who the fake priest is and what exactly I should think about the Finney family. ()

Come and Knock on Our Door (2015) (S03E03)

English I had to lower my rating this time because the pace of the story significantly slowed down and the action, which I liked in both previous episodes, disappeared. Bunchy, who really annoyed me in the previous season, is currently entertaining me in the third season, but the character Abby gives me the impression that the creators don't know what to do with her. ()

Breakfast of Champions (2015) (S03E04)

English I started watching this series for the first time and gave it only three stars. The pace of the story was even slower than in the previous episode, Abby's return to Boston didn't interest me at all, Conor is definitely a spoiled brat who I would rather physically harm, and Ray's new job didn't appeal to me much either. ()

Handshake Deal (2015) (S03E05)

English The fifth episode, fortunately, wasn't as tragic as the previous one, although the creators still didn't know what to do with Abby's character. Bunchy made me laugh again, I wasn't bored with Mickey and Daryl either, the situation at the Finney's was getting more complicated, and I feel like Eddie Marsan is delivering even better performances. ()

Swing Vote (2015) (S03E06)

English The pace of the story was quite slow considering it was supposed to be a hectic election day. After the episode, I felt like the plot didn't really move forward much, so I let myself be entertained by Bunchy (now actually Brandon), his Mexican fiancée, and the paranoid Terry, who was great. 4 stars. ()

All Must Be Loved (2015) (S03E07)

English In the previous episode, I criticized the weak pace and slightly stagnant plot, but in the seventh episode, the creators managed to eliminate these problems. The story had momentum, there was decent action and some intrigue, and I have to admit that I was surprised by the direction the plot line with father Romer took. ()

Tulip (2015) (S03E08)

English Once again, the episode had a decent pace, and I enjoyed watching it from beginning to end. Ray and Lena and their pets took care of the entertainment this time, and I was pleased to see the old team back together again, although Avi seems somewhat unhealthy to me. ()

The Octopus (2015) (S03E09)

English I rate the ninth episode as successful. Although there was no big action, Mickey did not disappoint again and triggered a chain of unpleasant events with his behavior. Well, unpleasant, I welcomed them, there was immediately something to watch, the events picked up a decent pace and Cochran's return pleased me. ()

One Night in Yerevan (2015) (S03E10)

English I really enjoyed the episodes in the last third of the third season. Once again, it was not a wildly action-packed episode, but I still had a great time. The Finney family and the return of Cochran managed to spice up the storyline, so I could enjoy it and there was no talk of boredom. ()

Poker (2015) (S03E11)

English I really don't understand how the creators managed to ruin the fourth episode when they otherwise supply me with such great episodes. I really enjoyed watching Ray try to save his own ass for a change, Cochran and the Finneys, that was a great move on the part of the writers. ()

Exsuscito (2015) (S03E12)

English The conclusion of the third series was mainly about action, I already understood why the creators were saving it for the last episodes. The whole episode had a very good pace, the creators managed to build a decent atmosphere and tension, and this time I wasn't bothered by the family problems in Ray's dysfunctional family either. ()

Season 4 (2016) (S04)

English The weakest season of the series so far. At times it seemed that the writers did a line with Mickey. The biggest disappointment was waiting for me at the end. Every season finale until this one had been excellent, but there wasn’t much to look forward to this time, there was no energy. ()
