It's a few days before Veera's glamorous wedding and she's going stir crazy. So this fashionable industrialist's daughter persuades her groom to take her on an outing, and her life is changed forever: she is abducted – by mistake. At a loss, her kidnappers haven't a clue what to do with their higher caste detainee. They decide first of all to remove the self-confident bride as far away as possible from Delhi. Veera is terrified and fears the worst. Mahabir sits behind the wheel of the truck which carries her further and further away from her familiar urban environment. He's a hard-bitten young man who knows as little about Veera's life as she does about his. Two very different Indian lifestyles collide. Their journey through the unbelievably vast expanses of Haryana, the deserts of Rajasthan and the remote mountainous regions of Punjab and Kashmir change them both – and allow them to discover the things they have in common. Highway is a modern Bollywood film with opulent visuals, up-and-coming stars and a superb soundtrack by A R Rahman. A road movie which also reflects events in India since the fateful gang rape in Delhi in 2012. (Berlinale)
