The meeting between the Polish director Andrzej Żuławski and Romy Schneider provided them both with an unusually powerful experience. While Romy had already established her roots in the French film scene and had already had stellar years in Austria and Germany and several years in Hollywood, Żuławski was making his first film outside of Poland. Their film together, That Most Important Thing: Love, is a raw depiction of life on the fringes of the film industry. It's very striking and, according to certain selections, one of the three best Romy Schneider films ever made. In the secondary literature, you can read about the process of catering to the actor's roles that Romy faced during filming. ()
