Binatang Research Centre, founded in 1997 by biologist Vojtech Novotny, is one of only a few research centres in Papua New Guinea. Every two years, a small group of students from the University of South Bohemia in Ceske Budejovice come to this island to study the unique rainforest ecosystem. Ten young scientists, in cooperation with local experts, have the opportunity to run their own project in an environment that has the most plant and animal species in the world. In the meantime, Binatang Research Centre runs a long term study of tropical plants. An international team is making a list of all the plants growing in an area of 50 hectares, which will then be published online to create study material for scientists around the world. It helps us to better understand the rainforests and their requirements. We still do not know how so many plant and animal species can coexist in the same place. The film also shows the warm relationship between the students and the natives, who help the students with research, introduce their traditions and even prepare a pork feast for their guests.
