Queen, The

Carnival, someplace in Argentina. In order to prepare for the prestigious role of parade queen, 11-year-old Memi must undergo endless hours of dressing and makeup. All that remains is to burden her little head with a spectacular crown – but the graceful little girl has trouble carrying it. They say you have to suffer for beauty but who in such a case actually earns the accolades and enjoys the admiration? Isn't Memi submitting to every adult injustice merely to fulfill her parents' wishes? This spare movie focuses on a young face in which tension, fear, and resignation reflect the reverse side of a traditional event. (Karlovy Vary International Film Festival)
