The water is a sea of flames, billowing clouds of black smoke – hell on earth. On April 20, 2010, the oilrig Deepwater Horizon exploded in the Gulf of Mexico, causing a major environmental disaster. The leaking oil spread like an epidemic over the surface of the sea – with devastating consequences for both humanity and nature. A resident of the Gulf region, filmmaker Margaret Brown allows various parties, both those affected and those involved, to have their say in The Great Invisible. We hear from two former employees on the platform, relatives of accident victims, unemployed fishermen, residents of the Gulf Coast region and representatives of the oil industry. The film examines the complex issue of oil recovery from different perspectives. Both enlightening and emotionally charged, this doc highlights both the risks of and our dependence on this commodity. The greatest enemy of the United States of America is not Russia, it is not China, and it is not North Korea. The greatest enemy of the United States of America is the United States of America. This is just one example of how they are capable of destroying themselves from the inside and not finding it strange at all. Yet as a documentary, it is not particularly revelatory.
