Nerve

Teenagers deserve their movies, and Nerve does that well, however much its focus on the current state of social interaction makes it topical for about four minutes. Still, it does an excellent job visually of looking at the world through the screen, especially with the neon lights nonsensically strewn about the set, the accentuation of color, the frequent up shots, or the overall conception of big-city youth as an extravagant fashion show. The real world is thus loosely intertwined with the virtual one, reflecting the concept of seeing reality through a colored image, where I can always choose what reality will look like. The soc-transition itself predictably gets brutally out of hand at the end and the film turns into total idiocy, but up to that point it's quite enjoyable, constantly stirring the pot and, most importantly, visually captivating. This is one of those films where I don't understand why it's so terribly underrated. After all, how else should a thriller look these days? It's got incredible pacing, more suspense than ten good horror movies combined, a likable main character and a handsome lead, so what more could you ask for? I’ve cooled off a bit, but it took a lot for me not to bump Nerve into my top ten list the second I got out of the theater. I’m sure I still won't be able to hold back after the next viewing because it's awesome! (01/20/2017)

The immensely sympathetic main protagonist, a current new idea and the beautifully colored camera surprised me and turned Nerve into a pleasant experience. The finale is, true, a little barren and the most thrilling scene was the motorcycle ride. However, watching till the end was not as much of a problem as it might seem after seeing the teaser. A pleasantly paced film that keeps going from start to finish. Currently, it's not such an original topic, but the film has good characters and great drive. It carries the film throughout and doesn't stop until it's over. Sure, it could have turned out differently, it could have been grittier, but even so, it's not bad. (10/21/2016)

I don't give a damn about how illogical it was, because I just enjoyed it. Nerve has a likable central couple, a very decent pace, plenty of suspense and a great soundtrack. Far from being just about entertainment, the movie also serves as a warning about the negative impact of modern technology and social networks on the lives of young people. Rapper Machine Gun Kelly makes a couple of cameo appearances as the bad guy and clearly enjoys it. (75%) (07/16/2022)
