The Deuce (2017)

English As it turns out, the official description on HBO Europe does not match what the series is actually about. The development of the porn industry was pushed to the background for the most part. It was more of a gritty chronicle of downtown New York, which I enjoyed most of the time. Maggie Gyllenhaal and James Franco’s performances clearly stood out, and I enjoyed the show despite a weaker second season. ()

Season 1 (2017) (S01)

English After the end of the first season, I am very satisfied, even though I was expecting something completely different. The porn industry is my favorite industry by far – the engineering industry or car manufacturing for instance leave me absolutely cold. This time I read the description of the series, which I don’t usually do, so I was quite surprised that pornography was actually pushed to the sidelines. But the creators had it well thought out, they wrote a great story, gave it a perfect retro vibe, showed off an excellent cast and totally won me over. Maggie Gyllenhaal played the life-hardened Eileen/Candy excellently, but the real tour de force was Margarita Levieva in the role of an almost twenty years younger Abby. 4*+ ()

Pilot (2017) (S01E01)

English The pilot episode was a classic introduction to the characters and setting, and it proceeded at a calm pace. The plot wasn't particularly remarkable, and under normal circumstances, three stars would be enough for my rating. However, I had to add one more piece for the quality atmosphere of 1970s New York. ()

Show and Prove (2017) (S01E02)

English Similarly to the previous episode, I didn't experience any frantic pace in the second episode either, but instead, I understood the way this matter will work and decided that I will enjoy it. In the flood of today's movies and series with polished plots, where the main hero usually deals with their homosexual orientation or a change of gender, it is a pleasant change. ()

The Principle Is All (2017) (S01E03)

English Yeah, yeah, this works for me. True, it still needs a little more polishing to perfection, but I'm basically satisfied. I really enjoy this hidden side of New York, the absence of the typical positive character is refreshing, and I'm really looking forward to what the creators will come up with next. ()

I See Money (2017) (S01E04)

English I can't help it, I simply enjoy it. The pace of the story was still a little slower, and it should bother me, but it didn't. Firstly, Vincent realized that nothing is really for free, and additionally, I had a lot of fun buying a gun with the operator, smoking a cigar, and going on a date with a journalist. ()

What Kind of Bad? (2017) (S01E05)

English The tempo of the story significantly slowed down this time due to the creators focusing too much on the character of bartender Paul. However, I was still not dissatisfied, as the plot was very interesting despite minor flaws (at least for me). Pornography still plays some kind of secondary role, but the misery of the lives of professional companions was portrayed quite vividly in the episode (and with great consideration for delicate individuals). ()

Why Me? (2017) (S01E06)

English So here, everyone probably understands what it means when you take a detour for something. In the series about the beginnings of the porn industry in the USA, the path to pornography is not revealed until the sixth episode. No, I'm not complaining now, rather the opposite, I am very happy with how the creators approached the filming of the series. Just keep going. ()

Au Reservoir (2017) (S01E07)

English Hmmm, the seventh episode and I still haven't seen a bad part. I would rather say that I like the series even more despite its slow pace. A huge part of it is the perfectly captured atmosphere of New York in the 1970s and the excellent casting - the characters are extremely well-developed and highly believable. ()

My Name is Ruby (2017) (S01E08)

English An excellently executed finale of the first season. Despite a wide range, the creators managed to cover all profitable activities and lead them to a properly prepared continuation for the second series. In addition, they managed to touch on the then "progressive treatment" of homosexuality. In comparison to that, I really don't understand how today's gay people can complain about how difficult things are for them. Another darker experience was Ruby's fate, and if something really amused me, it was the discovery of preferences at porn booths. ()

Season 2 (2018) (S02)

English The second season wasn’t a nice surprise. I expected the quality to go up, but it turned out to be the exact opposite. The filming was sidelined by an oftentimes lackluster and unimportant plot, I often felt that the creators themselves were taken aback by the six-year gap between the first season and this one. Nevertheless, I remain optimistic and look forward to the third season. ()

Our Raison d'Être (2018) (S02E01)

English I wasn't exactly thrilled with the first episode of the second season. Although the atmosphere of New York in 1977 was perfect, the plot was somewhat slow. The creators moved the story forward a few years during the break between seasons and at times it seemed like they caught themselves off guard. The first episode was simply dull. ()

There's an Art to This (2018) (S02E02)

English Even the second episode has not yet reached the standard of the previous series, but I added to the rating because, unlike the first part, there were matters here that interested me. The episode was definitely very instructive, pornography from the seventies and the beginning of the eighties always seemed aesthetically unappealing to me, now at least I know why. ()

Seven-Fifty (2018) (S02E03)

English In the previous installment, I added one star because I expected the story to take off at least as much as in the first season from the third episode. But it didn't. True, things were happening, the predecessors of the pornoscars were being passed on, and the passages were getting further away, but I didn't really see a significant advancement. ()

What Big Ideas (2018) (S02E04)

English I added a star because the creators of the series about the beginnings of the porn industry in the USA have finally decided to include the filming of a porn movie. A decent dose of humor balanced out one tragic event, so I would be lying if I said I didn't enjoy myself. ()

All You'll Be Eating is Cannibals (2018) (S02E05)

English Even though a larger part of the plot was completely off, I closed both eyes because the end of the episode suggested that I might finally get what the whole series was originally supposed to be about in the next episode. All the situations dealing with other matters seemed to be better developed to me in the first season. ()

We're All Beasts (2018) (S02E06)

English In the sixth episode, the creators finally did not disappoint expectations. The filming of Candyino's dreamed "artistic" porn movie went full steam ahead and it was impossible not to have fun with it. Quietly, I hope that all the remaining episodes will continue in this spirit, filming porn on the streets of New York in full traffic was definitely instructive :-) ()

The Feminism Part (2018) (S02E07)

English The previous episode pleased me so much that this one felt like a cold shower. The plot was mostly about nothing, with a few bright moments, but the creators clearly created substitute problems and blind storylines to cover up the fact that it's just a plain cotton. Boredom, boredom, blandness, blandness. ()

Nobody Has to Get Hurt (2018) (S02E08)

English In watching the second season, I feel like I'm on a rollercoaster. The previous episode was a clear disaster, while I really enjoyed the eighth episode. I have to thank user mira007 for the link to the article. Informative. I just don't understand why Emily Meade doesn't feel comfortable with the sexual scenes and wonders what her children will say about it someday. Did she really not understand from the script that she plays a role of a prostitute and porn actress? Hmmm, what can I say about that? ()

Inside the Pretend (2018) (S02E09)

English I was relatively satisfied with the final episode of the second season, even though it was not a masterpiece this time either. However, the plot was interesting, I had something to enjoy, and as usual, the most interesting moments came at the very end. But most importantly, video cassettes are coming! ()
