Every year thousands flock to Nevada's Black Rock Desert for Burning Man, an experimental arts festival that began in 1986 as a summer solstice bonfire ritual. It's gained a reputation for its communal hippie culture, promoting a message of radical self-expression, decommodification, and its environmental "leave no trace" policy. As it became more popular, controversy arose; from drug busts to uninhibited sex, its reputation hasn't always been stellar. But beyond its much discussed debaucheries, Burning Man is an important incubator for up-and-coming artists. It's the largest venue for interactive art, which includes an impressive array of performances, sculptures, and light and sound displays. Filmmaker Arnaud Paris focuses THE ART OF BURNING solely on this aspect of the celebration, spotlighting the work of the AfrikaBurn Fire Collective, Peter Hudson, Georgia Collard-Watson, and others who have made their mark at the festival. Forget all your preconceived notions of the event, and open your mind to the extraordinary talent it nurtures.
