The land-owner Gáthy's wife is dying after giving birth to a child. A brother wandering in the fields hurries to the dying woman with a foundling in his arms. The woman gets over the crisis. Gáthy promises the brother, that they will bring up the foundling as their own. After the brother leaves, they realise they do not know which is their own child and which is the foundling. They decide to bring them up as their own twin-sons. When the boys are about to get married, they learn from a rumour that one of them is not a Gáthy child, but the parents still cannot and do not want to draw distinction. The parents of the girls, who did not want their daughters to marry a foundling finally accept that the truth is undetectable and they do no interfere with the youths' happiness.
