Saint István the king has Thonuzóba, the pagan Petcheneg leader and his family captured. Rather than give up their pagan belief, the proud leader and his wife are both ready to face death. Alpár, his son, is raised to become a Christian clergyman, Márton and is, at first, stationed in Marosvár, the Christian outpost of a big plain inhabited by Petchenags, surrounded by watch-fires all over the vast territory. Saint Gellért, the Bishop, sends him to fight the pagans' belief now becoming too popular again among Petchenegs. His task is to cut off Seruzád's hair. She is the woman leader of the Petchenegs, who refuses to go to the Christian church. Alpár is also entrusted with the task of accompanying the beautiful Zenóbia, Csanád's daughter, on her way home from Bizantium. Thonuzóba's son, confronted by two religions and two women, fulfils his task, but later chooses to stay on the vast plain lands, becoming the leader of the Petchenegs and, finally, the revolt of his people being put down, abandons his native land.
