Meet the Feebles

Plots(1)

When we first meet our young hero, Robert the Hedgehog, he has just joined the Feebles (a Muppets-like musical theater troupe) as a member of the chorus. The group is busy preparing for its big live TV debut: "The Fabulous Feebles Variety Hour." If they do well and the ratings are high enough, they might get a syndicated series. Too bad that the show's host, Harry the Hare, is afflicted with venereal disease in its advanced stages, the smack-addled knife thrower is suffering from horrific withdrawal symptoms, and the star of the show, Heidi the Hippo, has developed a binge-eating problem after being dumped by the show's producer, Bletch, who, to top it all off, moonlights as a drug pusher. Poor Robert becomes a helpless witness to all sorts of perversions before events finally escalate out of control, culminating in a machine-gun shooting spree the likes of which are seldom seen in musical comedy. English Take Altman's The Player, mate it with Troma’s Terror Firmer, douse it with Peter Jackson, and voila!!! ()

English A promiscuous bunny, a squeaky fly, a cross between an elephant and a hen, a drugged lizard, a hippo with a machine gun… in short "Welcome to our show Meet The Feebles!!!" And don't provoke our prima donna Hippo Hilda, or she'll shoot you to pieces with a machine gun. ()

English Peter Jackson couldn't control the unnecessarily large number of characters, who wander unnecessarily too much between almost the entire genre range offered by the film, meaning that the final product cannot be more than just a patchwork of humorous scenes that lack a more solid plot. In addition, the "amateur" handheld camera reduces the clarity of individual scenes, and thus it becomes a problem to fully enjoy porn being shot or the promiscuous rabbit in action. Although Jackson is wastefully bustling with ideas and his head contains a lot of details that can imprint wit even on banalities, in this case, he has overdone it. If he had concentrated more on building a better plot skeleton (and the script had that potential!) and extended the film by a few minutes, it would have been possible to enjoy the witty cadence as well as his acting brothers from the director's debut period.
