Spectacular battles, rollicking humor and lavish production values frame a sweeping romantic drama that all audiences will enjoy. This grand drama is set in 17th century Poland during the Cossack uprising against the Polish nobility. As the violent confrontation builds, a battle for the heart of a beautiful girl rages between a dahing Pole and a brutish Ukrainian. (official distributor synopsis)

If someone wants to revisit the definition of Romanticism from their school days, I recommend choosing this film, which perfectly encapsulates all the characteristics of the style: Grand emotions, gestures, love, passions, war confrontations and duels, a bit of mysticism - in my teenage years, I would have been thrilled by all this, devouring Walter Scott or Polish classics. Today, it seems a bit over the top, but I acknowledge that given the budget the Poles worked with, they produced a decent historical epic for a broad audience. Moreover, it's well-cast. Overall impression: 55%. ()
