Movies can be the sweetest escape, and Future '38 delights wholeheartedly in their conventions, knowingly playing with language, colors, costumes and plot points, all in service of a joyful, time twisty take on a hero's journey. Our current climate makes this brief time spent in a re-imagined future all the more enjoyable; seeing 2018 drenched in a sense of optimism and erupting with vibrant Technicolor is a cathartic respite from the altogether different Nazis that seem to keep popping up in our current news cycle. Director Jamie Greenberg skillfully embraces the broad hijinks, wide-eyed romance and playful winks available in this distinctive and comedic hybrid reality. (Slamdance Film Festival)
