If we stacked individual DVDs with the recorded history of our existence into a pile, we would reach all the way to the moon. And maybe even further. However, DVDs are not the most reliable medium any more, we wouldn't use them for storing information about our society for future generations. But, what would we use? Discs such as CD, DVD, USB, SSD, or strings of DNA? This documentary produced by a German-French collaboration deals with the grim questions of making a backup of our existence and memory which we could use even 300 years from now. The technological development of data storage devices has sped up with the development of the internet, and 90 % of all our data has been generated during the past two years alone. As we all know, some backup technologies disappeared a few years ago, meaning that we actually don't have machines for reading them. Who remembers floppy discs or VHS cassettes? This is why some organizations prefer the safer option and make a backup of their indispensable files just as they did in the "good old times", with a long-lasting ink on a sheet of paper.
