‘The band is my life’s work, although it was never planned’, sings Bennie Jolink, the singer of Normaal, a pop group from the Dutch Achterhoek region. The band has been around for more than twenty-five years now and all this time Bennie has been their figurehead, with his raucous voice, his long hair, moustache and cowboy hat. His fans know him as the beer drinking and indefatigable party animal, who loves driving cars and racing motorbikes. But this rugged image demands a tough personal struggle. Due to chronic health problems, the singer is forced to spare himself outside the shows, so at home we see quite a different Bennie: prodding a plate of lettuce, lazing in a deck chair in the garden and busy doing the only thing he claims to have a proper education in: painting.
