Paradise is the place we forever feel we miss; that we dream of, search for and, if need be, even invent for ourselves. Heaven So Far is the visual combination of two biographies: Those of astrophysicist Harald Lesch and designer Wolfgang Joop. The film takes us on a journey through the sublimity of space, to the melancholic glamour of Monte Carlo and the baroque church of St. Ottilien in Bavaria, on to the fairytale atmosphere of Berlin Potsdam – finally arriving at the protagonists’ inner landscapes. This meditation on the eternal longing for paradise illustrates what we are all looking for – not so much a geographical place, but rather a combination of states of being and atmospheres. The film strives to achieve a sensual composition of thoughts, images and music, built around the double-portraits of two apparently contradictory yet creative people, who come to surprisingly humble conclusions at the end.
