When a lawyer is murdered, assistant D.A. McCoy (Sam Waterston) believes the slayer is also responsible for a previous killing but as he struggles to link the two crimes, he is surprised to be opposed by his former colleague, Jamie Ross (Carey Lowell). Ross, who has been counsel for an international war crimes tribunal, shocks her former cohorts when she curiously represents a detestable client; if she succeeds, a man already wrongly convicted of the crime will be executed in spite of McCoy's dogged efforts.
