Plots(1)

The plot of the film takes place at the end of the 1970s, when Major of the SB tried to get Jan Zieja to cooperate. With this devilish plan, the then secret police wanted to compromise the Polish opposition. The film tells the story of a real character, a legendary Warsaw priest and a well-known supporter of moral values. After the war, Jan Zieja took an active part in social events and was a co-founder of the anti-communist Committee for the Defense of Worker. (3Kino Fest)

English Zieja is a deeper drama in the style of Krzysztof Zanussi’s Polish film school of psychology. A confrontation between two men of diametrically different characters – a wise priest with a clear conscience and the morally degraded communist foot soldier who interrogates him. The dialogue-based film returns in flashbacks to different historical eras, to various places in Europe (the priest in the war, the priest at the Vatican), which enriches it with a certain narrative quality, though it still doesn’t provide much viewer excitement. In terms of artistic ambitions with which it could appeal to a more discerning viewer, the film stays rather within the boundaries of average public-television production, where real depth is overshadowed by superficial kitsch. However, the charismatic Andrzej Seweryn excels in his role as the priest. [3Kino Fest] ()
